Born in Czechoslovakia September of 1994 “Aswan” or “Juan” as he was affectionately known on the streets assisted in the finding and arrests of many hardened criminals.
Although Juan was always ready to find a bad guy, he was just as happy finding his toy.
Juan retired from police work in 2004. On Juan’s last canyon search (for an armed robbery suspect) his skin was pierced by a fox tail that traveled deep into his chest. Removal of the fox tail was difficult requiring several operations.
Most of the medical care needed had to be paid by Juan’s handler, as Juan had retired from City service, and was no longer covered medically.
In addition, Juan has developed (as most aging German shepherds do) hip and lower back problems that require daily medication. Juan is still very active, and is doing fine enjoying his retirement.
