Retired Police Canine Gerd

Gerd

Gerd was adopted by a former canine handler after he was retired prematurely due to health reasons.  He developed a form of canine asthma, which at times causes him to have a debilitating cough and bronchial problems.  The cough became so bad Gerd was breaking blood vessels in his throat, causing him to cough up blood.

Gerd's new family has been paying the costly veterinarian bills to keep him healthy and reduce the severity of his condition.  When contacted for help, the San Diego Police Canine Association stepped in to assist with the medical costs for Gerd. Here is a letter from Gerd's owner describing his condition:

"Gerd was retired due to health problems.  He has an ongoing problems with breathing almost like he has a form of asthma. This is something that won't improve, we can just hope to keep him comfortable. He gets shots on a monthly basis.  We have been able to give him the attention and time he needs. He has had to be boarded and given heavy duty antibiotics a few times, when he gets an infection in his lungs.  He is a very loving and friendly dog and he has been a pleasure to have as part of our family. It just breaks my heart when he has one of his coughing episodes.  But other then that, he is a great dog and seems to be enjoying retirement."
