Canine Officer Gino

One afternoon, Gino and his handler responded to a burglary in progress. They arrived to find a man holding a knife waiting for them.  What they didn't know is the man broke into the business so the police would respond.  He had armed himself with the knife to commit 'Suicide by Cop'. He was going to attack the officers with the knife and force them to shoot him.

After several warnings for the man to drop the weapon, Gino was sent to disarm the knife wielding man. The man stabbed Gino repeatedly, however he ultimately dropped the knife and was arrested

Thanks to the efforts of Gino and his handler the police were not forced to use deadly force and a violent armed suspect was arrested.  Incidents like this happen regularly in San Diego and frequently
the use of deadly force is averted by the trained police dog.

Gino suffered severe lacerations during the incident requiring immediate surgery.  We are pleased to say he is back to work and looks better than ever. Without Gino the suspect in this case would most likely have injured or killed an officer or nearby citizen.
