Canine Officer Reiko

After many years of faithful service, Reiko has finally retired. Reiko has a special place in the hearts of many handlers as he's had a few. Typically our dogs retire at or around the five year mark.  Reiko, on the other hand has had two one year extensions. He has such a strong desire to work and has been extremely healthy, which has allowed him to continue working.

About one month ago things changed for Reiko.  One morning his handler, came out to feed him and found that Reiko was not acting right. Reiko didn't seem to be in control of his legs any longer.  As he walked he would lose control and fall.  His handler took him to the vet.  The results of the exam were he had a ruptured disk in his neck; Reiko's career in law enforcement was over.

The cost of the surgery was very expensive and due to his age it was decided Reiko would be retired. Reiko is home now and his handler has been spending his own money to keep the dog medicated and comfortable. Reiko will have the surgery when his handler has the money.
